Diversity

Welcome Message from the Dean:

Dr. Joan Creasia

“The University of Tennessee recognizes that the pursuit of knowledge and understanding is enriched by an environment in which people of diverse backgrounds learn together and from each other, and participate in free and genuine exchanges of views. It recognizes that all members of the University community benefit from diversity and that the quality of learning, research, scholarship and creative activities is enhanced by a campus climate of inclusion, understanding, and appreciation of differences and the full range of human experience.” (From Diversity and the University of Tennessee:  A Framework for Action, 2005-2010.)

The College of Nursing is committed to providing an environment that honors and respects all aspects of diversity.  The College welcomes faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or veteran status. To prepare graduates to function as professional nurses in a global society, the curriculum incorporates cultural perspectives and provides opportunities for students to provide health care to clients from different cultural groups.  The College seeks to attract and retain faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented populations in the belief that diversity enriches the academic enterprise and enhances understanding of our multicultural society.

The College of Nursing Diversity Plan is a roadmap aimed at achieving a greater level of diversity among our faculty, staff, and students and in our academic programs, and community/global partnerships.  As we continue to embrace diversity, our ability to function effectively in a global society is greatly enhanced.
