Welcome to our Thai Scholars

Four students from Thailand have come to Knoxville to join the College of Nursing this fall. The first to arrive was Pratsani Srikam, known as "Niam". She comes from the north of Thailand and is on a full scholarship from the Thai government for four years of doctoral study. She spent the summer working on her English skills in order to study such subjects as philosophy in a second language.

The remaining three students came at the beginning of the semester from Burapha University, about a 45 min drive from Bangkok. Dr. Waree Kangchai is on the faculty at Burapha. She is here to do a postdoc comparing depression among the elderly in Thailand and the US. She is working until the spring with Dr. Bonnie Callen as her advisor.

Suriyupa Sanantreangsak, who goes by her nickname "Pa" is interested in pediatrics. She has completed her coursework for doctoral study and is here at UT to work on her proposal with Dr. Nan Gaylord. She will be here for one year.

The fourth student is Kanchana Piboon. She goes by the nickname of "Ped" which means duck. Ped has also finished her coursework and is here to complete a research proposal with Dr. Bonnie Callen. Her area of interest is also depression in the elderly. She and Waree will return to Thailand in the spring because they have had a grant funded by their national government.

These four scholars share 242 for an office. Please stop by and say hello. You can also help them practice their English.
