Head Start program
Our Master-level nursing students perform physical exams for Head Start students who have not been able to access a primary care provider. The students do a comprehensive exam, identify health risks and problems, treat acute problems such as ear infections, and refer children for follow-up if needed. The Master nursing students usually provide 40 to 50 physical exams each time we visit Head Start. To view a photo of student’s Head Start experience, click here. The Consumer Health Resource Information Service (CHRIS) Program
Ms. Pat Melcher and her undergraduate nursing students provide health care to the Hispanic population. Their community service is a part of the Consumer Health Resource Information Service Program or CHRIS program for short. The CHRIS program strives to reduce or eliminate health disparities among minorities such as Hispanics. The CHRIS Program is a faith-based initiative designed to assist national efforts with addressing minority health disparities in the areas of heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, immunization, infant mortality, and diabetes. Its basic function is to increase awareness among church membership about these conditions through the provision of health education, information dissemination, and related services that are provided by nurses trained as parish nurses or lay persons trained as information specialists. The CHRIS Program has been implemented at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish in Lenoir city as part or their existing health ministry that serves their Hispanic membership.
