The University of Tennessee College of Nursing Diversity Committee was established in September 2006. The committee consists of six faculty voting members, appointed for two year terms with one half rotating off each year and one student representative from each program (BSN, MSN, & PhD). The committee oversees diversity issues and activities, and promotes respect of diversity at the College of Nursing in all of its forms including: different ideas and perspectives, age, ability, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, political persuasion, as well as socioeconomic and geographical diversity.
The purpose of this committee is to create a climate of recognizing and appreciating the variety of characteristics that make individuals unique in an atmosphere that promotes and celebrates individual and collective achievement. Examples of these characteristics include but are not limited to: cognitive style, culture, economic background, education, geographic background, language(s) spoken, marital/partnered status, and gender identity. The committee facilitates implementation of the University and College of Nursing’s strategic objectives related to diversity.
